Russian Soldier’s Ballpoint Pen Art

This particular Russian soldier battled in Afghanistan, then on to Tajikistan and finally in Chechnya. Some soldiers write diaries or poetry or use 35mm film to capture the essence of battle, but drawing using a ballpoint pen became this soldier’s way of dealing with war. Unlike many works we have featured on this blog, this is a first-hand visual record of life and death.

His artworks were drawn with the most humble of writing tools. They represent how art in particular can become a coping mechanism in such horrific circumstances.

NEW FEATURE: Jim Edwards, The Cavendish Hotel - 2009 (Biro on paper)

Jim Edwards is best known for his depictions of iconic buildings and bridges of the North East. His Newcastle Cityscapes are some of the most recognisable art to come out of the region in recent years. His work falls into two genres, contemporary cityscapes and abstract paintings inspired by manmade forms and buildings.
